In July, a back yard breeder started to dump her dogs in a South Carolina Shelter. We were notified they would need help, as she was bringing in 15 of them. She sent 5 in at a time. The shelter was overwhelmed and asked several Cocker Rescues to help out. We understand she had 45 dogs, mostly cockers, with a few shih tzu & poodles tossed in. The dogs all lived in muck. They had some really dilapidated dog houses, that were mostly covered in mud and poop. What we think she did was just breed these dogs almost to death, to make puppies, and never giving the breeding dogs any healthcare. We understand several are blind. All these animals were treated like livestock and not a family pet. Just another money grubbing back yard breeder with no ethics at all. Luckily, each one is sweet and just craving to be loved. After a few weeks of figuring out transport, and arrangements made with the rescues, we finally got several of them up here (PA., NY). Special thanks to Manny (the van driver) and Mary Ellen (our transport coordinator) and the shelter for making sure this transport happened. The 4 girls we received were in really horrid shape. I can't even begin to describe the condition they lived in. Years and years of poop, urine and crust were covering these girls. I'll be showing you a few of the before pictures, but please don't be eating anything when you look.

Now, lets take a closer look, but hold your nose.

This is Sweet Georgia Brown. Her coat is missing in areas, as she was pulling most of her fur out. What was left, were mats and poop. That light color you see is poop. She was great for her grooming, even though it tugged and pulled on her very raw and sensitive skin.
This is India. She's a black & tan cocker and most likely blind from neglect. The things you see hanging are her boobies. When we opened it up to see her spay stitches, it was pretty bad in there. Each one has infections and kennel cough

Loving little Blondie was also wearing what I call a cast. It's like everything on them felt like concrete, but it was matts and poop and whatever else, like mud and pee all hardened together. She's a doll. Appreciated being cleaned up and gave kisses.

Silly Kelsey has the worst kennel cough of the 4. She was blowing green boogers all over us. Luckily they don't mind me wiping noses and taking eye crust off. She's got a few freckles on her nose, making her even more adorable. She loves to make faces too. Kelsey is about 4 years old, the youngest of the bunch.
Adjusting pretty well it looks like huh! 8/14/05

This is the new Blondie. She's enjoying her new life with foster mom Meredith. Doesn't she look comfy? She's fostering in the pocono's of PA with another cocker and a lab/shephard mix. She's doing pretty good. She'll have an exam tomorrow with her vet and we'll have more news on her condition.
India, Kelsey and Georgia Brown visited our vet yesterday (8/15/05) and it wasn't the greatest news. India is blind and has a raging infection in her eyes from neglect. She's also got many mammary tumors that probably are cancer. Right now we're concentrating on getting them to feel better from the abuse and neglect of their first life. Kelsey tested heartworm positive. We have to get her better before we can treat her for heartworms. Georgia Brown should be named Calamity Jane. Boy did she have fun yesterday. She locked me out of my car, and kept trying to get into the vets trash can. She too has many mammary tumors that could be cancerous. :-( She's also fighting infections and all 3 girls are on several meds a day to help them feel better.

Kelsey loved the vet - and especially enjoyed the nice cold metal table. No kidding, they even kissed the vet tech after she drew blood for tests. She didn't even want to get off the table

This is India. She's blind, but it doesn't slow her down in the least. She's now going up the steps faster than me. She can find her way in & out of the door
UPDATE: Our auction did very well thanks to everyones help. India & Georgia are scheduled for tumor removals on October 5th.

UPDATE: 10/5/05 Georgia & India have had their surgery to remove the many mammary tumors they each had. The picture to the left is them right before they went into the vet office. Today, 10/06/05 we'll pick them up and bring them home. Both girls are sore but doing well. The one big 'thing' that had us all worried was actually an Inguinal hernia. Georgia had that repaired while she was under and we're thankful it wasn't it tumor. It was really large.

This is the hernia that Georgia had repaired. Next we wait for pathology reports. We're keeping all paws crossed they come back benign. However, with tumors, a large margin is removed and surgery is usually the cure.
There are pictures below, of the girls boo boos.. so don't look if you have a week stomach. The girls are doing pretty good today. They have decided it's time to start playing again, so they got two new toys. Well, they got them first, then all the others decided they needed to play too. We had to rush India back to the vet 2 days after her surgery, as she started to bleed pretty heavily - but luckily Dr. Maxwell took care of that with a tight belly wrap. This is just soo heartbreaking that they had to endure so much because of their disgusting owner.

India has 18 staples in her and it looks like she's managed to remove one or two. Her pathology report is in. Mixed Mammary tumors, low grade of malignancy, good prognosis, borders of the sections are free of tumor cells :-)
Georgia Brown has at least 26 staples and she too managed to get one or two half way out. We're still waiting for her report to come in. Mixed Mammary tumors, benign adinoma GOOD prognosis. She's taking lasix for her enlarged heart, no murmur.
