Major "Bonehead" Ackerman

Garry & I weren't married yet, but we wanted to go adopt a dog from the SPCA.  We were at the shelter, and watched as the worker took one dog from each kennel.  They're were two in each kennel run.  That dog that was taken away, never came back.

That's when it hit us.  That it was "D" day.  We decided to take Major out for a walk.  He was a goof, bouncing and peeing on everything.  His paperword said he was an owner surrender and was kept in the laundry room.  He was at least 6 months old.

We adopted him.  He was really Garry's dog.  Being a lab mix, he took forever to train.  He ate almost every rug, sock, concrete, milk jug, you name it, he was eating it.

He was a gentle and goofy dog through his life.  He welcomed all of our new dogs as well as our foster dogs that came along.

Summer of 2004
Major was puppy sitting the litter of 7 cocker pups we brought in.  He really did like other dogs, but at almost 15 years of age, he couldn't tolerate them hanging off of his tail or ears.
In the summer of 2004, we noticed a tumor on one of Major's nipples.  It just didn't seem like a normal fatty tumor, especially given it's location.

Our vet did chest xrays, gave him a very good physical, and at almost 15 years old, it was determined he had cancer.  She told us it was probably going to be about 4-5 months, and to take each day as a blessing.

Today, October 18th, the tumor has tripled in size, since Saturday.  It is spreading, and Major is in some pain from his arthritis, and other old age ailments.

We think we need to let Major rest soon.  He's had a wonderful long labby life, and we can see the pain in his clouded eyes.

We have promised all of our dogs that we won't let any of them suffer if it's terminal.

This is pretty much the position he's in all day.  He doesn't really move until daddy comes home.

Sometimes, he can't get up the steps, so he has to be carried.  You can see he's not feeling well.
